Double page spread images

For the double page spread, I decided to use two pictures of Billy and two pictures of Zaid. One being a mid shot, and one being a close up. With one of them showing a more serious side and the other showing a more fun side, it reflects off of the interview on the double page spread, showing their personalities. I also think that it fits well with the genre of my magazine, as you can see their style.

Contents images

Here are the images that I used on my contents page. One being a picture of the main band, which was the picture I was originally going to use on the font cover, and the other two of bands playing live. The two pictures fit in well with the layout of the contents page, as I used Kerrang!'s contents page as a rough layout of mine, and I think that the pictures show this in the final product.

Cover image

Here is the image that I decided to use as my front cover. I think it represents the theme of the magazine as being quite fun, showed by the expression on his face. I was originally going to use a photo of two people, but the image I wanted to use wasn't suitable for the magazine. Doing the shoot on a purple background, made me change the colour scheme of my magazine, as I originally was going to use red, black and white. It has now changed to purple, black and white.

Preliminary

Here is my preliminary magazine front cover, being new with photo shop, the cover is really basic, as i stuck to basic fonts and colours that represent John Cabot.

Plan for double page spread

Here is a plan for my double page spread, the top plan being the left page, and the bottom plan being the right page. I came up with the idea of the middle being half and half of both Billy and Zaid's faces, making them seem more connected together. Around each of them I will again have polaroid pictures, with the left page focusing on Billy and the right side focusing on Zaid. I have kept the title the same style and font as the front cover and the contents page. I originally wanted to stick to the colour scheme of red, black and white, but during my research, I found that not many magazines have the same colours all the way through, so for the double page spread, I will use the colours blue, purple and white.

Plan for contents page

Here is a rough plan of what my contents page is going to look like. Again, with many similarities to the front cover, the colour scheme is going to be red, black and white. I have also made the title look the same, and the finished product will have the same font as the masthead to say 'WHAT'S INSIDE?'. I chose to use 'what's inside?' because many of the magazines I have researched don't just say contents, I think this makes the magazine seem a bit more personal. I have decided to have polaroid pictures going down the middle of the page, making the magazine seem a bit more smart, as the pictures will look quite old fashioned, which is similar to the magazine 'NME'.

Plan for front cover

Here is a rough plan for the front cover of 'DYNAMIC!' magazine. Creating this cover made me choose my colour scheme, which is going to be black, red and white. Which i think resembles to colours of rock music. I have made the title 'DYNAMIC' stand out the most, because on the finished product I want the masthead to be the main thing that catches people's attention. With this, I also came on to wanting a medium close up of the band for my front cover.
Results from questionnaire

Here is the results for my questionnaire. I have used pie charts to make the results clearer, this will also give me a better idea on what my magazine will look like, and what will be featured on the front page and the contents page.

Questionnaire

I decided to make a questionnaire in order to help me with ideas for the magazine, including a colour scheme and fonts that will be used. The questions I chose were.
1: Are you male or female?
2: What is your age?
3: How much would you be willing to pay for a music magazine?
4: What attracts you to buy a magazine?
5: What magazine are you likely to buy?
6: What would you like to see in a rock/indie magazine?
7: What colours do you associate with rock?
8: What font should be used for the masthead?

Plan for photographs

People: The people that i have chosen to focus on for my photographs is the band 'Beyond Recall'. I am only sticking to taking pictures of two people from the band, because i think they have the best type of look for the magazine, so not much is needed to make them fit in with the genre.
Setting: The setting for my photo's is going to be a range of places. I have chosen to focus mainly on the pictures being in the recording studio, showing how they record their music, and because they spend a lot of time in here it will show the main focus in there music, which is to record. I will take an individual picture of each of them showing a more fun side, this will also be set in the recording studio. Another setting i will use is some sort of industrial setting, i think this is a good place to set a rock/indie shoot because it shows the more edgy side of music.
Costumes: I have chosen not to use costumes for this photo shoot as the people i am taking pictures of already have the look I want. Zaid, who is the lead singer has a very classic rock style, wearing mainly black skinny jeans, and tatty band t-shirts, creating his own unique style. Billy, who is the lead guitarist has a style that is very unique and individual, wearing mainly t-shirts from the brand Drop Dead, which is very colourfull and full of fun, and usually wearing vans. They both have a very unique style, and look good together and when they preform. Nothing needs to be done to their hair, as it is already a rock/indie style, being long and neat at the same time.
Props: The props I will be using for this photo shoot, is a recording microphone, an electric guitar, and a acoustic guitar. I will only be using these for the photos in the recording studio. I think that the electric guitar will give more of an edgy feel, and the acoustic guitar can show the more softer side to their music.

Researching magazines

The magazines that i have chosen to research are NME, Rock sound and Kerrang!. I have chosen these to research becasue they fit in with the genre of my magazine, and are all very different types of magazines.
NME: First for music news. NME stands for the new musical express and is one of the best selling music magazines known. It is not known to be a magazine, but more of a music paper. Focussing on punk rock, old school and indie it is very compared to Rolling stone magazine. NME is very succesfull, not just by selling papers, but by having their own music channel and radio station, making them more well known. NME foucusses on the importance of new music, and old music, as it refers to bands like The Beatles often. It gives a new outlook on the music world, and is known all over the world. The style of NME is very old fashioned and is layed out like a newspaper.
Kerrang!: Where life is loud. Kerrang! is known for it's onomatopoeic title, which relates to music as kerrang is the noise made when playing a power chord on a electric guitar, giving the audience immediate knoledge of the genre of the magazine. Kerrang! tends to focus on more unknown and upcoming bands. It is not just known for it's magazine, but it's radio station, tv channel and very succesfull Kerrang! tour, which is held at the start of each year, and tends to have a big headline band. The genre that Kerrang! tends to focus on is a mixture between rock, punk, metal and emo. Giving people a wide choice to read about, whatever music you listen to. The style of Kerrang! is very modern and tends to keep the colours red, black and yellow throughout each issue, showing the colours associated with music.
Rock sound: Rock sound is a magazine that is less commercial and fouccuses on alternative music. It is not as well know as NME and Kerrang!, but is just as good with its content and features. It does not have a wide range of media as it only has a magazine, not like Kerrang! and NME, where they have radio stations and tv channels. Rock sound channels around new alternative bands.

Naming the magazine

I decided to make a mind map of words associated with music to help me make a decision on what to call the magazine. I ended up coming up with the name 'Dynamic'. An idea came straight to my head, and that at the end of the title, I will put an upside down dynamic microphone to make it look like an exclamation mark. I will put the word dynamic in capitals to make it stand out more.

Who is the target audience?

The target audience for my magazine is people aged 15-20, both male and female. I have chosen this age group to focus on because I think that people this age are more likely to listen to the music and bands that I am writing about. No one younger or older would probably read a music magazine in this genre, as I am doing research on magazines 'NME' and 'Kerrang!'. Both of which focus on the same type of music. My magazine will be more aimed at females, as the way I write and present it will be in a more feminine way, as a posed to a magazine like 'Kerrang!' where the writing is aimed at males more. Most bands in this genre are all male, so I think that writing in a different style will give a better aspect of females listening to the same music.

What is the Genre?

The genre of my music magazine is going to be rock/indie. I have chosen this certain genre of music because it is what I listen to mostly, and what appeals to me. I know a lot about this type of music industry and I think that will help me with the process of creating the magazine. I have chosen to do my double page spread on a band called 'Beyond Recall', mainly focussing on the lead singer. I chose this band because I think they fit in well with my type of magazine. I will also take pictures of other bands, probably made up ones to add onto the contents page.

Time Plan

Here is the time plan that I will follow in order to make my music magazine the best that it possibly can be, I have used the main titles --  Overview, pre-production, production and post production. With each different section having different things to research, draft and compose. I have made this time plan so that it finishes a day before the deadline, I will follow this as it is shown.
